This one-day course will explore how structural changes in US capitalism since the 1970s have transformed North Americans’ intimate life: our sexuality, relationships, marriages, families, and job expectations. These more personal areas have been neglected by rigorous Marxian analysis. In the US, the personal is a far more compelling arena for intervention than electoral politics but can be considered in a greater context in terms of redefining the political and what practice can be transformative for our everyday lives. This exploration is crucial to reaching out to Americans.
