Beyond the Elections - What Comes Next?

Beyond the Elections - What Comes Next?

A round-table discussion with Cornel West, Laura Flanders, Chris Hedges and Richard Wolff

This online event is organized by the Left Forum and co-produced by Democracy at Work

October 27th, 6:30 - 8:30pm EST

With increasing everyday talk and discussion of socialism, anarchy, "outside agitators" and Marxism, the powers that be are now weaponizing these terms through consistent distortion and disinformation campaigns. These counter moves both confirm and demonstrate a fear of the spectre of an emergent Left. To what ends will they go to protect their hegemony? This response to the "Left" spectre alongside the possibility of building a new political left formation will be discussed by Cornel West, Laura Flanders, Chris Hedges and Richard Wolff. Primary questions such as what and where is the "Left?" Is it a loose grouping of single-issue groups whose greatest strength is protest and some resistance or is there a possibility of reviving the best of the socialist, anarchist and communist traditions in this conjuncture? Will the election and ongoing electoral politics make a real difference? What leverage do we the people have against Big Money and Big Business? What opportunities exist in this moment for changing the political and economic system that has served so many so poorly for so long?

We might not be sure who will win the upcoming election, but there is no doubt as to who will lose. There is no time to wait for a concerted and effective insurgency based on the principles espoused by Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Eugene V. Debs, Jesus of Nazareth, and other awakened revolutionaries throughout history. In the words of panelist Chris Hedges, “Resistance is not only about battling the forces of darkness. It is about becoming a whole and complete human being. It is about overcoming estrangement. It is about the capacity to love. It is about honoring the sacred. It is about dignity. It is about sacrifice. It is about courage. It is about being free. Resistance is the pinnacle of human existence.” – See you there.
