Left Forum 2017 - Economy and Psychology: A Tale of Two Depressions

Most Americans have never recovered from the recession of 2008 and the outsourcing, mechanizing, robotizing and computerizing of their jobs. Men’s salaries and working conditions have been deteriorating since the mid 1970s. Women’s salaries have increased to 77% of men’s low salaries. Americans are emotionally depressed. We consume 50% of the world’s psych meds and 80% of the world’s heroin. Suicides addiction obesity and other social ills have increased. Too many are in despair. This panel explains what happened, why it happened and what to do about it.

I made this godawful travesty of a video. It’s a LIVESTREAM, and I experienced technical issues which cleared up at about 18:45. I’m almost done with an edited version, which will soon (tonight or tomorrow) be available on my YouTube channel, Other Voices, Other Choices. Chill, dude.

The sound improves greatly after around fourteen minutes in. The first eight minutes are just the camera rolling before the workshop started, and I confess the first 4-5 minutes of the talk proper had me feeling the same way as Mr. Axtell, but the sound, at least, straightened out after that (I was listening much more than I was watching). I’ve heard both of these folks quite a bit, and I think this is one of their most eloquent, compassionate, and insightful presentations. It would be great if there’s an alternate recording of those first few minutes, though!

Who made this godawful video? The sound is awful, the sound doesn’t match the action, the sound keeps going in and out….. Generally, a travesty that doesn’t do well to match the seriousness of the talk.
