In this episode, Kevin, Cinar and Larry welcome back Michael Peck, Executive Director of 1 Worker 1 Vote, and former International Delegate (USA) for the Mondragón Co-operative Corporation (1999 –2019). They have a fascinating and inspiring conversation about co-ops, union co-ops and other hybrid ownership models, the critical emphasis on ecosystem building, the inequalities revealed by Covid-19 and how the pandemic shows we need a cultural reset, and the promising snowballing effect of the cooperative movement with bi-partisan support. Peck's wealth of experience and knowledge in the cooperative field enables him to give many concrete examples of initiatives, movements, and practical applications of these ideas all across the country, and from the Mondragon Corporation.

In this episode, Kevin, Cinar and Larry talk with two key figures at the Madison Cooperative Development Coalition (MCDC). Charity Schmidt is a cooperative development specialist at the University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives. Ruth Rohlich is a Business Development Specialist for the City of Madison, working in the Economic Development division. Among their many topics, they discuss how the city of Madison is approaching this cooperative initiative, the importance of community ecosystems, how entrenched legislation creates unforeseen barriers to cooperative ownership that must be changed, financing, and more.

They discuss the motivations for cooperative conversions, the practicalities of co-op conversions and what they do for communities, some realities of Main Street Employment Act, how the right of first refusal works for housing cooperatives versus business cooperatives, the existing but rarely used systems within the Workforce and Innovation Opportunity Act that could support cooperative conversions and more.

Matt Cropp is the Co-Executive Director of the Vermont Employee Ownership Center and has a wealth of knowledge about a number of issues that pertain to co-ops. Matt mainly works on conversions, but has had experiences of all types organizing different worker cooperatives and ESOPs. We discuss the work that the VEOC does, including its upcoming conference. This conversation spanned many topics and we can't wait to have Matt back on to talk more about his work.
